Quarrel Deluxe - review

iPhone / iPad, £ 2.99; India Games / Games Denki

The ridiculously crowded shelves of the App Store under the weight of the simple word games and strategy sims moaning, so it takes something special to grab the attention of jaded buyers app. I think Deluxe dispute should do it. Developed by Dundee-based Denki Games, the creators of the groundbreaking pre-iPhone puzzle, Denki Blocks, it is an elegant combination of Scrabble and Risk Management, win in the player control over all the squares on a number of environments against AI has enemies in a word creation game.

Each page starts with a small army of tribesmen and a certain number of places. Players can then take turns trying to overtake the areas closest to their own, by 'argument' with the tribesmen from other players. These arguments are essentially the word Scrabble creation tests - you get a selection of letters, which make each a score, and you have to be the best word possible. You 're limited however by the number of tribal people you have in your seat when you take four men into battle, you only have one word for up to four characters. If you have a square that has a larger number of enemy tribe defeat them, you get to take one of them as prisoners, and he fights with their husbands.

When you gain a new square, you move several of your people on to it, but you need to divide your armies so that you don't leave any areas of your territory poorly defended. The skill of the game is knowing how far to push your territory in a single turn - try to take too much land in one go and you end up with several squares defended by just one lonely solder - they're asking to be attacked. At the end of each turn, the game sends in a set number of reinforcements to each team, and you can also gain extra men by filing a gauge that counts up your word scores. Meanwhile, when AI players are challenging each other, the player gets to take part in a bonus challenge which involves making the best word possible with the letters that your opponents are fighting with; the better your word, the most points are added to your gauge.

It must be said, this is not an easy puzzle in the Popcap ilk. The rules take a little time and effort to appreciate, and shows the richness of the territorial strategy only after several games. Luckily 'sa really nice tutorial mode gives you through the basics. If you 've confrontation with all that came, you have a beautifully presented, extremely deep strategy crossword game that' s lovingly with convincing subsidiary features (such as dictionary definitions of words that you create) is filled. They fight on a variety of landscapes, each have with strategic quirks, and all the AI ??opponents of different styles, some brilliant play on words, but lousy on a territorial strategy, another master of both.

The disadvantage is the lack of a multiplayer component. The game was developed (and originally demoed) title on Xbox Live and play against friends on the sofa is sure to be the optimal experience. Multiplayer is sure to be added in future iterations of the Smartphone version of the song, and I 'm hopeful one XBLA version will still get to a point.

As it stands now, and for £ 2.99 (although it try a limited number of free output to), armed Deluxe is a must for Scrabble Words with friends and fanatics who want to buy to try out a different kind of lexical challenge . It is a great satisfaction in turning the course of a war with one or two brilliant tactical land grab and a few wise words had, I 've landscape until my last card was and somehow fought back to win. And if you have enough tribal members on a tile, there 'sa chance to improve your score by solving the eight-letter anagram, multiply that accompanies any dispute, so you'll even feel like a countdown participants.

Quarrel is just a lovely, skilfully-crafted joy. Denki's genius is in making you feel that hours in the game's company have been educational rather than a time-killing indulgence. That is the loftiest aim of all word games. Few really achieve it.
