App reviews: BackStab, Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Songkick and more

Whereas our daily Apps Rush post focuses on what's new on the various app stores, once a week we review the smartphone apps that we've spent some time with. This week's crop takes in gaming, music, literature and social applications.

Songkick Concerts

Live music website Songkick's first mobile app is brilliantly simple in concept: it scans the iPod music library on your iPhone, then tells you when artists whose music you own are playing nearby. You can search for gigs in other towns and cities too, and set up push notifications to ensure you are alerted as soon as new concerts are announced. You can also tap through to buy tickets for gigs, although here the experience varies according to how mobile-friendly Songkick's ticketing partners' websites are.

The latest app designed to help you find more apps uses a flowchart-style interface, where iOS apps are linked according to their similarity. Start with one that you like, and see what it's connected to, double tapping at any time to read a full description, see screenshots and tap through to the App Store itself. It's an innovative and tactile way of making sense of the hundreds of thousands of apps jostling for your attention, although it complements other discovery apps like Appstream rather than replaces them.

E3: GamersGate announces ad-supported FreeGames service screenshot

GamersGate launches free games, an ad-supported platform for PC and Mac. It 's set to start in 84 days, after a countdown timer on their website.

How will it work? Each user is able to "have to charge to five games on their account at any time with the ability to add additional games." What does that even mean? As you only have up to five games and then add more as ... actually screw. It 's probably pay a bit extra, and you' re not read because you want to pay extra.

You 'll see a message when you start the free game. The proceeds of those ads goes to publishers that can use the service to appeal to a very specific target group. In turn, you play a game for free. No word on which games will be free, or whether the entire library. A beta of Free Games is open mid-June so that more details are expected to follow shortly.

Free games! Each user is or wait and see what 's on offer before jumping on board?

E3 2011: Hitman Absolution – preview

Finally, Io Interactive has to Agent 47, the bar-master of disguise and killing returned. Oh, how we 've missed him

Danish developer Io Interactive gained an excellent reputation thanks to the Hitman games, the mysterious Agent 47 - a man with a barcode on the back of his shaved head and unmatched capabilities when it comes to shipping, there was the most heavily defended targets.

But since 2006, the laconic fellow has not been seen, with Io instead making two Kane and Lynch games which, frankly, were rather rubbish. Someone, though – either at Io itself or publisher Square-Enix, which owns the studio – has finally seen sense, and after a five-year hiatus, the company has returned to its alma mater in the form of Hitman Absolution, due for release some time in 2012 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Fortunately, the demo we were treated Hitman absolution at E3, it was more or less immediately clear that Io Interactive has their comfort zone back. The game - shown for the first time - create a whole activity. What we experienced was pre-alpha software, but it already looked like a big step for the franchise.

How many games at E3, it was clearly a product of the late period in a console cycle, if the developers are working on how to extract the last ounce of their graphics processing capabilities.

The action started with a comprehensive recording of the environment: a wet, rainy Chicago mercilessly. A certain amount of table-turning game was - Agent 47, the consummate hunter, was himself the subject of a citywide manhunt by the police.

Io Interactive outlines some of the game 's most important aspects .- The developer has the game \ improved' s artificial intelligence engine, so that the enemies you encounter in a more sophisticated (and less predictable) behavior, Agent 47 has a new feature called Instinct, which allows him to size situations before taking down multiple enemies, and he is now inhabiting his disguises more convincing.

The stated goal of all games offered - it is a new engine called Io Glacier 2 - is to give players the freedom of choice. You should be able, in whatever way you always want to play, something that promised a lot of games, but few delivered.

Agent 47 creepy refuge in an abandoned library is crumbling, and still full of books. It quickly filled with impractical large number of policemen, and he set about dispatching them individually, and employs camouflage cover and unleashing vicious take-downs, including a garrote with a power cord.

Finally, the demonstrator confronting tired of such an approach and a large group of police officers, grabbed one as a human shield to steal his mac-22 submachine gun, several planning and making his escape, to escape a fire.

Working his way up the building triggered a sequence that was more appreciably cinematic than in previous Hitman games. He ran up a staircase, taking out a number of cops below by shooting a chandelier. A police helicopter was called in, whose relentless machinegun-fire was destroying his cover, but he leapt thrillingly to a nearby building.

Finding an isolated police officer, he took him out secretly and stole his clothes before an apartment which is curated be as full of a few hippies a marijuana-growing business. Of course, they distributed in funny, stoned panic - we saw a glimpse of an attempt to flush its inventories down a toilet. Soon the real police officers appeared to be, and Agent 47 took one out by going to him over the head with a handy bong.

The last we saw mechanic agent involved 47 's ability to move, in the disguise - his instinct told him that if the cops sidling past he had to leave the building were always suspicious of him, and he could hide his face or In an instinct, grab a donut from a handy box (Donuts are always on hand if there is a large concentration of police officers).

It was such a joy to watch, Io Interactive to do again what it does best - what Hitman games. Graphically Hitman absolution was fantastic, and the gloomy view of Chicago looked very impressive. But the prevalence of the major cinematic-looking sequences and the portion was surprised to see humor, but very welcome.

Welcome back, Agent 47 - where have you been all this time?

Hitman is absolution for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC will be released in 2012

Games news from E3

Nick Gillett on the sequels revealed Vita PlayStation and Wii at E3 U

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, recently held in Los Angeles, is the videogame world's biggest annual event, acting as a kind of hype lightning conductor for the next couple of years' blockbuster games and new hardware. Below is a glimpse of what we'll be playing in the near future.

The Games

As always, this year 's E3 has a flourishing trade with sequels. The Elder Scrolls V: The Old Republic promises to be a role-playing experience even more great than its immediate predecessor, but lost with more concentration and less inclination, in the menus; Dust 514 takes console players in massively multiplayer online casting space opera EVE, as they locked planet mercenaries for hire; adventurous 3 Uncharted: Drake 's Deception looks beautiful, as is fitting for a franchise that 's quick to PS3' s flagship; Halo 4 is on the way, not that anyone doubted that for a second; Minecraft , The boundlessly popular modification-friendly indie sandbox game is coming to Xbox; BioShock Infinite 'S move from the sea floor on cloud city seems appropriate dizzy while Battlefield 3 see how you could '\ d imagine real war. And finally, a killer app for 3D-TV: Resistance 3 Will be able to show a separate image in full screen mode to different players on the same TV.

Microsoft

E3 is huge, but within that the announcements made by the three big hardware manufacturers are its highlights. This year Microsoft had only one thing on its mind: Kinect . Controller-free game is now all out attack Mass Effect 3 - Awkward call voice commands to cohorts in battle, and choose conversation responses - for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Where you gestures Minority Report-looking weapons to upgrade to the Romans in head butting Ryse . Kinect is fascinating technology, but so far, apart from the psychedelic Child Of Eden, said hasn 't an awful lot of fun.

Sony

Although missing Microsoft 's pathological obsession with motion control, Sony still seemed determined to take Move shoehorn, its high precision to the Wii-Mote paradigm, in pretty much everything. But there was also spare PlayStation Portable Vita (Later this year), adds the large touchscreen, two serviceable analog joysticks, cameras, and a rear touch-panel, the latter being simply the most fascinating facet of what is ultimately a threat to Nintendo 's handheld gaming supremacy . Games for the system were of the lush-looking title and an equally wonderful LittleBigPlanet , both seemingly delivered without compromise on a portable.

Nintendo

Its share price may have tanked for days afterwards, but Nintendo probably "won" this year's press conference face-off. Announcing Wii U (out 2012) , a console that looks very much like a Wii, but with HD graphics and using controllers that are as much like an iPad as they are conventional joypads. With a 6.2in touchscreen, two analogue sticks and the usual tilt and accelerometer controls, Wii U also lets you use all the various remotes, guns, SNES-style pads and games that worked with Wii and which may already be cluttering up your living room. The announcement of the Nintendo eShop for 3DS was soon followed by its launch and it's a great deal more solid and reliable than its creaky DSi forebear was. 3D Pokedex and Excite Bike 3D are available as free downloads.

Preview: Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Xbox 360)

Preview: Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Xbox 360) screenshot

This is the part where I'm supposed to speak, generally, about other Deus Ex Games and say things like " Deus Exis the greatest game of all time and you're stupid if you do not like. "Then I would make a smooth transition to the topic Deus Ex: Human Revolution and mention that Eidos Montreal tries to restore the series as the all-time high after the founding of the ridiculous Invisible War .

Maybe I would even tease you with a line suggesting that Human Revolution appears to be well on the road to picking up the pieces of the series that Invisible War left behind.

For now, I'd like to tell you that my sessions with his short, phenomenal build one mission were previews. It was entertaining, the filming was surprisingly sharp, with the choice, I was cool, and the stealth was indulgent and satisfying. I would say that this is also on the road ... oh-ho caught me.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Developer: Eidos Montreal
Publisher: Square Enix
Release Date: 25 August 2011

In the opening hours of Deus Ex: Human Revolution , Is a political war in an open, organized and violent morphing. Modern human augmentation that combines human and machine is about to reach for all. For the purist movement that is a revolution that requires the blood to stop. Science, then spoil their invention and must defend it against aggressors such puritanical.

We see shades of the intellectual part of this struggle in our real world. Science can now fix man with screws, plates and meat carcasses. One day it will be able to address disease at the genetic level and perhaps even improving the human experience. For some it is a real fear that this next step in the creation field discoveries are stumbling, and we see and hear the conversation between figureheads, politicians and others around us.

It is much more complicated than that, but suffice it to say that there are several levels of discourse and multiple "groups" out there vying to be heard. For better or worse, Human Revolution cuts to the marrow by featuring just two teams, one of which is bad and the other a bit better: the Purists and science -- specifically Sarif Industries in the opening.

I didn 't get one large The purpose of this in my classes so spent, with Human Revolution But it seems as if she wants to say something about the medium. Whether any kind of comments will happen remains to be seen, but I like floating around the set and the ideas.

You play as Adam Jensen, a futuristic sword sell live game in the world of 2027th In the first few hours, you get a feeling that Jensen is an asshole with a troubled past. He was a SWAT officer once. Now he is rugged contractor working Sarif Industries, such as around the world implodes around him. Sharif is the creator and driving force behind this apparent increase in junk.

Revealing just beyond the introductory cinematic that some sort of conspiracy is going on around the announcement of this science, as you tour Sharif tests. Soon after, you're in the shit, like a group of bad guys expanded to high hell penetrate into the factory and put the shoe on the white coats and set fire to the laboratory.

It is noteworthy that this section is fully human while Jensen. He has no notes or other cyber-augmentation you've seen in teaser footage. The HUD and feedback systems are limited, so you're an up-front flavor of the battle as a naked guy given.

Human Revolution reminds me of a modern Rainbow Six Joint. It is presented in a first-person perspective, but most of the action is spent in the third person behind the cover. It is clear from the get-go that it is unwise to go gun blazing, balls in Human Revolution hurt as much as they do in a simulation, shooter, so after a few shots that you go down. The same goes with you face to the enemy, said.

The AI is smart in addition to brittle. Like in the FEAR Series foes card from their immediate surroundings and benefit from flanking positions. Slide between pieces of cover, then is a necessity as much as a clear head and a good goal.

Later in the laboratory scene, Jensen's murder - or at least to the extent that he will be reassembled and reattached must mutilated. Sariff takes it upon himself, complete with its tech Jenson, stripping some of the remains of his flesh, and adding machine parts.

For you this means you now have access to a large HUD that important information, a large mapping system and other useful collection of information elements. Jenson body can now be provided with upgrades, even if he earns enough experience points by killing and hacking to do.

In those first hours, I was confident that I have a feeling for what Jenson was thinking of his new machine loaded body to get, but I didn 't start any discussion about them. I also wanted to be able to give a spin-system upgrade, but I've never earned enough points.

There are, however, a bevy of upgrade paths and options, the majority of which seem to serve the two key action components of the game: stealth and assault. I'll also note that you can upgrade whatever, as Human Revolution Do not lock in a "class".

However, it is obvious that attack the people who want to upgrade armor and strength, while to the stealth-minded people on hacking and enhancements to the legs, who say we can concentrate, take the sounds of footsteps and such.

Each upgrade seems to be a power, add the mixture of action. Armor fixes can, for example, add the area of ??catastrophic effect attacks. A hack upgrade can add the benefit of the virus injections. Since I do not get to see how useful these measures, though, I'll hold my tongue for now.

Six months after his surgery, you regain control of Jenson, who still among the services Sariff Industries. Your first task is to ... examine some bad things down at a plant owned by the company. A group of purists have attacked and captured.

In the plant, you get a good sense of the alternate ways you can approach combat. You can, if you desire, go head-on with the foes patrolling the hallways. If you go this route, you'll encounter a lot of enemy conga lines. A dead dude triggers a response from others and people tend to pile up around the first kill if the environment is tight. There are a few set piece firefights, though, that keep the action fresh.

There is also a surprising amount of stealth options that can be made as the plant is riddled with canals and exploring different ways of being. Strangely, I came away thinking that this specific task more fun was to be done in stealth. The mapping system is generous, so you're always stuck updated movements of the enemy, who kills the great bugbear I have with stealth in general, the accidental discovery when I round the corner.

It's hard for me in the expectation that I run for Human Revolution After this demo. I think the shooting mechanics, a lot of simulation FPS rivals, is perhaps the main reason. If you play smart, you will live. Dude if you slap in the face of a hole, he dies. That's easy stuff, but satisfying.

I also think the dialogue and the story have a lot of potential. If you talk to people, a Mass Effect Scroll wheel appears, allowing you, for example, a space tug, sentimental, or intelligently about a topic. This wheel also appeared in situations that can change how a plot point shakes. In the complex, for example, I had the chance to kill a Purist, you save the hostages he held, or trying to save her. I opted for the former, but no matter what you choose, this is a sensible choice, hoping that I could have some impact on the Jenson and how the story shakes down the line.

I get the feeling that no matter that Jenson is no "good guy", but rather a guy who is in the gray area of ??what around him despite his augmentations. Is this an accurate takeaway, then Jenson has the chance to be a compelling character. A large part of the people I encountered seemed dual interests and have different intentions, so I think this is a valid bit of speculation on my end.

Feel free to revoke my nerd card, but I've never finished the original Deus Ex or him who all accounts, awful follow-up.
