09/24/2010 EA revving up Unity engine

Megapublisher signs multiyear licensing deal with middleware provider for unified development tools on all major platforms.

With Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 dominating the market, it's not often that another third-party middleware developer makes a headline. However, Unity Technologies has gained a big-time client to elevate its position in the middleware community, announcing this week that it has signed a multiyear licensing deal with Electronic Arts.

As part of the deal, EA will use Unity's development platform with an unspecified number of franchises, spanning multiple genres. Further, the deal allows EA's entire stable of studios to make use of Unity's full suite of tools, as they develop games on platforms that range from the Web browser to "consoles and beyond." According to EA, a primary reason for licensing Unity was its ability to quickly and easily convert content from one platform to another.

While starting a new long-term agreement, unity, and EA is really working since 2008 on the Web browser-based golf simulator Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online. Launched in April 2010, Tiger Woods Online is free to play, microtransaction supported the party in a long golf franchise. Developed by EA Tiburon, online games started with 10 local golf courses, including Pebble Beach Golf Links, TPC Sawgrass, and the Sheshan Golf & CC.

Currently, the Unity platform is able to create content for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, and Web.

When I first got my iPad, I got the Apple case for it. I liked the way it folds into a stand to facilitate touch typing in horizontal mode. I didn't like the way the Apple case showed fingerprints, oil from your hands, etc. I was constantly having to rub at it really hard to keep it looking clean. It also started to tear after about 3 months of use.

I've had the CaseCrown case for a couple of weeks now and really like it. It is functionally the same as the Apple case, but the material used doesn't require me to clean it on a daily basis like the Apple case. In fact, I haven't had to clean it at all.

The material is a bit shinier than the Apple case, which was flat black rubber. The CaseCrown looks like the same ballistic nylon as my Tumi computer bag. The material of the case is a little bit more slippery than the Apple case/stand and intially, the edge of the case would tend to slide out the provided slot that holds it upright. I quickly found that if you just shove the edge of the case a little bit further into the provided slot, it stands up fine and stays there.

I would highly recommend this case, especially since it's 60% of the cost of the Apple case which didn't last me that long!

The Casecrown case is so close to being the one. It is slim. It provides real protection for the corners of the iPad. It supports both a typing position as well as a more upright stand. In fact, it is very close to the Apple case in terms of awesome usability.

BUT... it blocks the ambient light sensor which causes the device to be too dim in my bright office. Sure I could turn off the auto light sensing, but I don't think any case is worth giving up such basic functionality. And after talking with Casecrown support they have no plans to change the design. Oh well... so close and yet so far.

I received this case yesterday, and so far am very pleased with the quality of the construction and materials that went into this case. I had been looking for a case similar in design to the Apple-produced case, but made with a material that wouldn't attract dust and lint like the Apple case is prone to. I had purchased another case with a similar design, but the quality of the materials and construction were not up to snuff. This one, however, meets and exceeds all expectations.



What I like most about this style case in general is the versatility of serving as a stand for typing. There are many other cases that also add this functionality, but most are either more expensive, or the ones in the same price range as this one tend to be flimsy at best. This is not the case with the CaseCrown Canvas Horizontal Flip case; the case is constructed such that the 'stand mode' is very sturdy, and I have no worries of it collapsing as I'm trying to type on my iPad. Again, this case shows superior construction for the price.

All in all, I am very satisfied with this case, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a solid, quality case on a budget.

The case is nice, but could be made with better materials and the fit could be a little tighter. It would have been nice if the clasp could be used to make the case stand on its own for hands free viewing.

This cover fits well the Ipad, the only problem I found was. There is no support to hold the top of the Ipad, so it can slip and hit the floor. The price is right.

For the most part, this is a great thing. Except design. There is nothing that protects your iPad on top, so if you take it on its head, your iPad slips, click 's land and breaks, cracks, etc. If you paid $ 500 or more ($ 829 in my case) for the iPad, choose a better cause than this, to protect him !!!!!!

06/24/2010 FarmVille Arrives on iPhone, iPod touch Zynga's free-to-play social agriculture sensation FarmVille spread to the iPhone and iPod touch today as a free iTunes App Store download.

"A [free] Facebook account is required to play FarmVille," says Zynga. "Current FarmVille players can access their existing Facebook farm, and new users can create a farm."

Farmville for the iPhone and IPod Touch is also compatible with, but not optimized for, iPad.

Three million iPads have been sold in 80 days, Apple has announced.

The tablet device launched in the US on April 3 and internationally on May 28.

Apple said that developers have created over 11,000 new apps for iPad, which is also capable of running "almost all" of the 225,000 apps on the App Store.

"People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "We're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world."

06/23/2010 Sega brand down download games for birthday Sonic ' To celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog's 19th birthday (the American release date of the first Genesis game was June 23, 1991), Sega of America is dropping prices on downloadable games and DLC, most of which is related to Sound . Offers on each platform have a different start date and a different duration.

PSN sales will act today Tuesday, July 6, and include PSP Sonic Rivals games ($10.99 or $13.99 for 1 or 2, respectively, or $17.99 for both) and discounted DLC for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic the Hedgehog.

iPhone sales run tomorrow to June 30 and include discounts on iPhone 's Genesis games ( Streets of Rage and Golden Axe are at the magic 99-cent price at which they start to seem like a good idea) along with Super Monkey Ball ($2.99) and the iPad's Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Edition ($4.99).

Finally, the sale will begin XBLA - and end - Thursday, June 24. If you want to buy any of the Genesis Sonic games for $3 each, you'd best have your Microsoft Points ready that day.

06/21/2010 E3 1910: Gaijin at E3, Bit.Trip 5 and The Empire Strikes Back

Alex Neuse and I became friends because I love his games. It's going to be awkward as hell if he ever makes a bad one. So far that hasn't happened, but it's something we're not afraid to talk about. That's just one of the issues that pops up in this most(ly) professional chat about life, video games, and everything.

If you're a Bit.Trip fan, this video is must watch stuff, as you'll get exclusive Bit.trip 5 info that Alex hasn't shared with anyone else; hints about how Bit.Trip 5 plays and feels, as well a list of the game's playable characters. It's a long video, just over ten minutes, which makes it mini-podcast worthy. My hands are tied on that one. My video producer is indisposed at the moment, so uncut and uncensored is how we have to roll.

Ten minutes can seem like a long time, but we hung out with Alex and cooperation. much longer than that.
